Frequently Asked Questions

Q:  Where do I take the placement assessment?

A:  The ASSET Placement test can be taken in the Assessment Services located in the Student Enrollment Services Building (SES), room 126.

Q:  What is ASSET

A:  ASSET is three, 25 minute timed placement tests designed to identify your skills in English, Reading, and Math.  ASSET scores are used to help you and an advisor decide which courses to take.  All students taking their first college level English, reading, or mathematics courses must complete the ASSET before they can enroll.  Allow at least 2 to 2 ½  hours for the assessment process

Q:  Why is ASSET required?

A:   We want you to be a successful student.  Research shows that placement testing helps you to enter English, reading, or mathematic course.  The result is that you will have a better chance of completing your courses and earning good grades.

Q:  How do I prepare?

A:  The Learning Assistance Center (LAC) has resource materials to help you prepare.

  • Tutorials are available in the Learning Assistance Center.
  • A content guide is available from the Assessment Services.
  • Prepare the same way you would for the ACT or the SAT.

Q:  When can I take the placement assessment?

A:  The schedule is available in the Assessment Services and the Welcome center in the Student Enrollment Services Building (SES) or by calling 602.243.8188 for the current assessment schedule.

Q:  What do I need to bring?

A:   Please remember to bring your picture ID.  If you are taking any of the advanced Algebra test, bring your calculator (see more on the Math Assessment questions).

Q:  Can I fail ASSET tests?

A:  No.  The ASSET test is not a pass or fail test.  It is used to assess your English, Reading, and Math skills so that you may be placed in the proper classes.

Q:  Can I retest?

A:  Yes.  Your test scores are good at any of the Maricopa Community Colleges and you are allowed one retest per year in any subject area.

Q:  Which Math Assessment should I take?
