Stress Management

Stress is the pressure that throws us off balance, makes us unhappy, and makes us susceptible to illness. Stress is physical, mental, and emotional strain or tension. Anxiety is an uneasy feeling - a reaction to a real or perceived threat. Stress is NOT a disease, but a normal occurrence in life.

Physical and Mental Reactions to Stress:

  • Trembling
  • Twitching
  • Muscle Tension
  • Headache
  • Sweating
  • Insomnia and Nightmares
  • Crankiness
  • Fatigue
  • Memory Challenges
  • Sexual Impotence in Men
  • Lack of Sexual Desire in Women
  • Health Risks increase with major life changes, i.e., grief, emotional stress, difficult classes, tests, grades, buying a new home or car.

What to Do:

  • Start a relaxation therapy program
  • Exercise regularly
  • Make changes in your diet. Avoid processed sugar, alcohol, and caffeine.
  • Get a massage and meditate as often as you can.
  • Play relaxing music tapes/CDs in your car, home and work.
  • See an SMCC counselor for help sorting out your personal, academic, and mental challenges. Call (602) 305-5608 to make an appointment
  • Enroll in a Yoga or Tai Chi Course/Program.
  • Enroll in a Counseling and Personal Development (CPD) course. SMCC offers CPD102AH - Stress Management, and CPD102AR - Relaxation Training.
