Suicide

Suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death for teens 15-19 years old in the U.S. The number of suicidal attempts ( where someone tries to fatally harm his or herself and the attempt does not result in death) is extremely high.

At Risk: Anyone who talks obsessively or fantasizes about death, those with severe clinical depression, socially isolated, profoundly bereaved or grief stricken and those that have attempted suicide in past years , those experiencing emotional trauma.

Teens 15-19 and senior citizens have the highest rates of suicide, but people of any race, culture, income level, or gender may view suicide as the answer to their problems.

Observable Symptoms:

  • depression
  • statements about guilt feelings
  • obsession with death
  • loss of weight and/or appetite
  • insomnia (loss of sleep)
  • highly nervous or anxious most of the time
  • giving away prized possessions

What To Do:

If you are considering suicide call the EMPACT Suicide Prevention hotline NOW, at (480) 784-1500.

If you suspect a loved one or friend maybe considering suicide, or if you have lost a friend to suicide, call a mental health professional. TAKE ALL SUICIDE COMMENTS SERIOUSLY!!!!! The SMCC Counseling Dept. will be happy to give you names of professionals in the community that can help. There are also support groups in the community where you can share your pain and fears in a caring confidential environment. Call (602) 305-5608 if you would like to make an appointment with an SMCC counselor to discuss your concerns.
