Campus Environment

The Department of Public Safety (DPS) staff has made a commitment to ensure that the campus environment at SMCC is accessible and safe for all who come to pursue their education and training. Those who would disrupt, interfere with, or otherwise jeopardize such an environment will be asked to leave the campus grounds at the direction of DPS staff.

Law Enforcement Jurisdiction

The certified DPS officers are empowered by the state of Arizona to make arrests. Non-certified DPS officers work in a security role. We work closely with the Phoenix Police Department, represent the administration of the college and have authority to act to assure the safety and well-being of college students, staff, visitors, and other personnel on the campus.

Depending upon the severity of the crime, the DPS staff will submit a written report of the situation to the college administration for appropriate action. Incidents involving felony crimes will be reported to local police officials.

To take a proactive approach in deterring crime on campus, the DPS staff will periodically inform the campus community of potential hazards or problems which could create a risk to the safety or well-being of campus community members.

Periodic notices and electronic mail will be distributed among the campus community whenever potential hazards are discovered.

Tobacco-Free Environment

South Mountain Community College has a tobacco-free environment policy. The use of tobacco products is prohibited in enclosed college buildings. This restriction also applies to college vehicles.

Alcohol And Drug Policies

The Maricopa Community Colleges support the Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act Amendments of 1989 (Public Law 101-226).

A variety of alcohol and other drug abuse prevention efforts occur at the college each year to educate students regarding drug use and abuse. Intervention information and services exist both on-campus and off-campus to assist students in overcoming dependencies.

Additional information about health risks, available programs, the college drug policy and legal sanctions/disciplinary action may be obtained through the Office of the Vice President of Student Affairs, and found in the class schedule.

Sexual Assault Prevention Program

Any person committing a sex offense is subject to campus disciplinary procedures handled through the office of the Vice President of Student Affairs. Sanctions may include suspension or expulsion for student offenders and termination of employment for employee/faculty offenders.

Victims of sexual assault should report the incident immediately to the Department of Public Safety or the Phoenix Police. Safety personnel will assist the victim in identifying the offender(s), preserving evidence for legal and/or administrative action, and provide information on counseling and other services available.
