Admission Information

South Mountain Community College (SMCC) welcomes your application as an international student and our staff will make every effort to assist you. Our admission requirements conform to the regulations of the U.S. Government for issuing F-1 student visa documents. If you are an international student on another visa please call the Registration and Records Office and ask to speak to the International Admissions Assistant about registering for classes. 

The admission process includes the following steps:

Request that your most recent TOEFL (Test of English as a Second Language) score report be mailed directly to SMCC (use institution Code Number 1000).

An applicant for the English as a Second Language Intensive Program (ESL) must provide evidence of at least intermediate command of English by way of one or more of the following criteria:

  1. At least six years of English language instruction as show by the applicants’ school transcript(s);
  2. A minimum TOEFL score of 400 on the traditional TOEFL or 97 on the computer-based test;
  3. A minimum IELTS overall Band Score of 4.0 or better.
  4. An original letter of recommendation from a teacher, school principal or the director of an English language institute attesting to the applicants’ proficiency at the intermediate level;
  5. Other credentials test scores, interview results or evidence accepted by the coordinator of the intensive English program or the college’s responsible designee.

  • Graduation from a secondary school that is equivalent to an American high school is required. Submit certified/notarized copies of official high school (and college if applicable) transcript(s) with a certified English translation attached to the original.
  • Submit a Financial Guarantee statement showing you have at least $17,800 per year (please see estimated cost chart for a breakdown of costs you will incur). If you will be receiving sponsorship The Affidavit of Support form must be completed in full and returned with supporting documentation to the Director of Registration and Records.

Supporting documentation is as follows:

  1. Letter from bank. This letter should be written on bank letterhead, state the approximate date the account was opened, that the account is in good standing, and the average amount carried in the account. This letter must be certified/notarized. Please note that the account holder should be either the student or the individual submitting an Affidavit of Support.
  2. If you do not have the full amount available in full at this time, please submit bank statements for a consecutive three month period. We will not accept bank statements that are older than six months before the start date of your intended semester of study. (i.e., For Spring semester, bank statements must be from July 2004 and forward).
  3. Please remember that an Affidavit of Support must be submitted from each sponsor and that each sponsor should submit financial documentation as listed above.

Additional Items are required if you are applying within the United States:

  1. Photocopies of all previous I-20s
  2. A photocopy of the I-94 card in your passport.
  3. A photocopy of the visa and picture page in your passport.
  4. An official transcript sent directly from the educational institution to SMCC.
  5. SMCC Transfer form must be filled out by International Student Advisor at current institution.

Our application deadlines are as follows:

  • Fall Semester: July 1  
  • Spring Semester: November 1

Ideal time to request information and begin application process:

  • Fall Semester:  July 1 st  =  December 1 st   (of previous year) – June 1 st  (of intended study year)
  • Spring Semester: November 1 st =  March 1 st  - November 1 st  (of previous year)

Notification of Admissions:

Upon receipt of all documents, your file will then be reviewed for admission to South Mountain Community College (SMCC). When you are accepted, you will be sent an acceptance letter and the I-20 Form.

Students Under Age 18:

SMCC recommends that students who are under the age of 18 (minors) have a guardian in the United States. In the event of a personal emergency, accident, illness, incarceration, etc., the State of Arizona will require the signature of a guardian before assistance such as hospitalization, legal counsel, etc., can be offered. SMCC is not permitted to act in the place of the parent.

Translation Services: For more information on translation services please contact the Registration & Records office and ask to speak to the International Admissions Assistant. Also note that the U.S. Embassy in your country may be able to refer you to a certified translator near you.
