Achieving a College Education (ACE)

Frequently Asked Questions

“The ACE Advantage: Mapping the Pathway from High School to College”

What is the ACE Program?

The Achieving a College Education Program (ACE) is a nationally recognized program that targets students who traditionally would not consider going to college and attaining a baccalaureate degree as an achievable goal.  Upon graduation from high school, an ACE student may have earned anywhere from 6 to 24 transferable college credits.

How long has the ACE Program been in existence at South Mountain Community College?

The ACE Program has been in existence since 1987 with the first cohort of students starting in the summer of 1988.

Who can be in the ACE Program?

High school juniors and seniors who attend one of the high schools in Phoenix Union High School District or Tempe Union High School District.

How much does it cost?

Operational costs for the ACE Program are provided by the college.  It is important to note, however, that high school students are not eligible for any type of financial aid and so the program is dependent upon contributions from individuals and outside organizations to cover the cost of tuition and fees.  Students are responsible for the cost of books and materials for their classes.  The estimated cost of supporting a student in the ACE Program from the first summer institute through high school graduation is $1,600.

What are the benefits of being in the ACE Program?

As a student in the ACE Program one has the opportunity to:

  • get a head start in college while still in high school

  • improve high school academic performance including academic competency skills and study skills

How do you apply to be in the ACE Program?

During your high school sophomore year, SMCC recruiters come to some of the high schools in the Phoenix Union High School District and Tempe Union High School District and give students ACE applications and information regarding SMCC’s ACE Program.

Contact the ACE Program to receive an application and information about the ACE Program at (602) 243-8276.

Is there an attendance policy?

Yes, the policy is outlined below:

When submitting an ACE application, it was with the understanding that if accepted, the student would become a college student with all corresponding rights and responsibilities.  Taking responsibility for class attendance is a large part of being a college student.  Ultimately, students decide as to whether or not to attend class.  It is best to save any absences for when they are really needed.

How do I view my grades?

A grade for students in each course will be given at the end of each semester.  An official grade report will be sent to your residence.  Please ensure that your current address is always on file.

Should I notify someone of my change of address or phone number?

It is very important that your current address and telephone number is always on file.  You must fill out a Change of Address form with the ACE office.

How many classes should I take a semester?

While you are in high school, it is recommended you take only one class during the fall and spring semesters and two classes during the summer semester.  Additional classes must be paid for by the student if the additional class is approved by an ACE Advisor.

What is a credit hour?

All college courses are measured by credit hours.  This represents the number of hours per week a student is in class.  Most courses you will be taking are three credit hours, meaning you will be in class approximately three hours per week.

Will I need books for class?

Definitely.  Books can range from $15—$150, depending on the course.  For the ACE Program, books must be purchased before the third meeting of class.  Please inform your instructor and the ACE staff immediately if you are unable to purchase your books.

What are registration fees?

Registration fees are implemented by the Maricopa County Community College District and every person who is registered must pay a $5 registration fee.  All students are responsible for their $5 registration fee.

What are lab fees?

Lab fees are associated with certain courses that requires a lab, such as most of the computer courses.  These fees usually range from $5—$15 and must be paid at the time of registration.

Is tutoring available for me?
