Overview
Although the Title V-Developing Hispanic Serving Institutions Program grant has many aspects that are beneficial to South Mountain Community College, one of the most important is the development of technology and classroom based course modules about critical thinking in math, science and writing.
The Title V Grant cultivates institutional change by developing critical thinking skills within courses and using a holistic approach to critical thinking within all disciplines. The purpose of this grant is to elevate the institution’s outcomes and transform students’ lives by measuring their progress while they are enrolled here.
By inserting critical thinking into courses throughout South Mountain Community College, students will succeed in transforming their lives by completing college courses. This transformation is measurable by authentic, institutionalized assessments that determine students’ success, barriers to success and the improvement of their cognitive abilities.
Very often, faculty members say, “I teach sociology or art, but I don’t teach writing!” But, good critical thinking and writing skills (thinking made visible) is a shared fundamental objective of an education and is a collective goal of the faculty.
