Module Goal
The goal of this module is to teach students a process which they could use across disciplines when critiquing.
Module Overview and Description
Students will enhance their critical thinking skills by learning how to identify common fallacies of reasoning in written language. They will evaluate an author’s accuracy, logic, completeness, and clarity. Furthermore, they will learn to evaluate the nature of evidence given in support of an author’s argument.
Module Needs Analysis
The module is needed because the students at SMCC are struggling to master how to critique. Statistics from the SMCC assessment report completed in 2005 showed that out of 125 students who were given an article to critique, 79 individuals had elements of a critique, 31 individuals completed personal opinions, 9 individuals completed summaries, and 6 individuals’ work was unreadable or incomplete.
