Module Goal

My module focuses on the needed skills that students have to master in order to apply for better employment.  At the completion of the module, students will have a sample cover letter and resume to use in their job search. They will also be prepared to complete employment interviews because they are familiar with interview questions and have practiced interviewing techniques.

Module Overview and Description

Here are the specifics.

Module Measurable Objective Content Assessment Items Module Outcomes and Metrics

Analyze an employment want ad.

Content demonstrates how to analyze a want ad for the skills and competencies desired by the employer. The student writes an article identifying the desired skills. Student self-assesses the skills that have been identified.
Self-identify personal strengths and weaknesses. Content demonstrates student self-awareness of the personal skills, abilities and preferences. Students complete a series of self-reflective tests to identify personal abilities. Students develop an identified list of their skills abilities and weaknesses.
Match personal strengths and weaknesses to the desired competencies of the ad. Content focuses on language and verbiage to match skills to required qualifications. Students develop a completed analysis with a grid of required qualifications and matching skills. Students complete an analysis, a cover letter, and a resume demonstrating the desired qualifications.
Prepare for an interview Content focuses on typical interview questions and the identification of strengths and weaknesses. Students use their skill analysis to prepare for a mock interview. Practice in a mock interview.

What will students do differently after they finish the module?

After completing the module, students will be able to:

  • Identify and list key needs of the employer from reading the employment want ads and employment postings
  • Identify their personal key strengths that match the employer needs
  • Be aware of personal key weaknesses or limits that may concern an employer
  • Translate and put key matching strengths into a cover letter, resume, and interview
  • Be prepared for the interview process, including answering questions, and offsetting potential weaknesses
  • Be able to self-reflect and think critically about the strengths and weaknesses demonstrated throughout the hiring process

Module Needs Analysis

In general students typically lack the work experience desired by employers and need to find ways to bring out personal skills and strengths that will match employment demands. Students need-

  • Skills in identifying employment opportunities that match their preferences
  • Practice in creating effective cover letters, resumes, and interviews
